Everything You Need to Know Before Getting Lip Filler

In recent years, the quest for fuller, plumper lips has skyrocketed in popularity. Among the plethora of options available, lip fillers have emerged as a go-to solution for those seeking a quick and effective enhancement without having to undergo plastic surgery. But what exactly are lip fillers, and how do they work? In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the world of lip fillers, covering everything from their origins to their potential risks.

So, what are lip fillers and how do they work?

Lip fillers, also known as dermal fillers or lip injections, are cosmetic procedures designed to add volume and shape to the lips. They typically consist of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps retain moisture and lip volume to the injection site. When injected into the lips, hyaluronic acid fillers create a fuller, more defined appearance, all the while smoothing lip lines and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the mouth area.

Plump’s medical director and founder, Dr. Blinski, notes that “Lip injections involve a simple and minimally invasive procedure that is commonly used to correct natural asymmetry or perfect one’s pout.” Here's what to expect during a typical lip filler treatment:

  1. Consultation: During your initial consultation, you'll discuss your goals, medical history, and any concerns with your injector. We will assess your lips and recommend a personalized treatment plan.

  2. Preparing the Area: Before the procedure begins, the lips may be numbed with a topical anesthetic, like lidocaine, to minimize discomfort during the injections.

  3. Injection Process: Using a syringe, the filler is carefully injected throughout the upper lip and lower lip, as well as around the cupid’s bow to achieve the desired volume, shape, and hydration. Your injector will strategically administer the filler to ensure natural-looking results.

  4. Recovery and Results: After the injections, you may experience some swelling, bruising, or redness, which typically subsides within a few days. The full results of the treatment will gradually become apparent as any swelling resolves.

How do I know what filler is right for me?

Selecting the right lip filler is crucial for achieving optimal results and ensuring a safe procedure. When choosing a lip filler, consider the following factors:

  1. Experience of the Injector: Opt for a qualified and experienced medical professional who specializes in administering lip fillers. At Plump, our team is comprised of board-certified licensed medical professionals, such as Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Physician’s Assistants, and Registered Nurses. These healthcare professionals have gone through an extensive in-house cosmetic fellowship and continuing medical education.

  2. Type of Filler: There are various types of dermal fillers available to use in the lips, each with its own unique characteristics and benefits. We offer both the Juvederm and Restylane family of fillers, considered to be the gold standard of treatment.

  3. Safety and FDA Approval: Ensure that the lip filler being used is FDA-approved and safe for cosmetic use.

What should I expect after my appointment?

First and foremost, expect to absolutely LOVE your results. We’re pretty confident you will. While lip fillers are generally considered safe , there are some potential side effects to be aware of, including:

  1. Bumps: These can sometimes happen with lip filler. Most bumps are small resolving bruises or a build up of the product. These can be massaged out or, in rare instances, we can use a small droplet of a dissolver.

Swelling: Swelling depends on multiple factors and just because you didn’t swell one time, does not mean you will not swell the next time you do a treatment. Sometimes an anti-swelling medication will be given after your injection. Major swelling typically lasts less than 4 days, while minor residual swelling can last 14-21 days. Yes, you can use an ice pack on them!

Bruising: Some people are predisposed to bruise. We suggest that you avoid vitamins, alcohol, ibuprofen, and general blood thinners to minimize the chance of bruising. Bruises can last 2-3 days or up to 2 weeks depending on type and location. Arnica pills ($50) can be purchased during your visit that can help heal bruises. Occasionally, we may suggest a follow up laser appointment to help speed up more severe bruises.

To minimize the risk of complications, it's essential that you follow all aftercare treatment instructions carefully. If you experience any concerning symptoms after receiving your lip enhancement, contact your provider immediately for guidance.

So, what’s the verdict?

Lip filler injections offer a safe and effective solution for enhancing the appearance of the lips, providing natural-looking results with minimal downtime. By understanding how lip fillers work and being aware of potential risks, you can make informed decisions about whether lip augmentation is right for you. With proper care and expertise, lip fillers can help you achieve the plump, youthful lips you desire, boosting your confidence and enhancing your overall appearance. Have any additional questions?
