    Masseter Botox

Jaw-slimming Botox that relaxes the masseter to soften the lower face and relieve clenching.

    The short answer

Masseter Botox places neuromodulator into the masseter muscle to reduce clenching and soften a square jaw. At Plump it bills at $16 per unit ($14.40/unit for members) and typically takes 30-40 units. Clenching relief arrives in one to two weeks; visible slimming takes two to three months as the muscle atrophies.

    About Masseter Botox

Masseter Botox treats the large chewing muscle at the back of the jaw. Two things happen when that muscle is relaxed: it gradually atrophies, which slims and softens the lower face shape; and the force of clenching and grinding decreases, which can relieve jaw tension, headaches, and TMJ symptoms.

At Plump we treat masseter Botox as both a cosmetic and functional treatment. Patients come in for face slimming, for clenching relief, or for both. Dosing is higher than upper-face Botox — usually 20–40 units per side depending on muscle size — and the slimming effect develops over 6–12 weeks as the muscle reduces. Functional relief from clenching often shows up sooner.

Results from a single treatment last 4–6 months. With consistent treatment every 4–6 months, the muscle progressively reduces and most patients find the slimming effect becomes more durable over time.

    In depth

Two different reasons people book it

Masseter treatment gets requested for a functional reason and a cosmetic one, and they run on different timelines.

The functional reason is bruxism — clenching and grinding, usually at night — along with the jaw tension, morning soreness, temporal headaches, and tooth wear that come with it. Weakening the masseter reduces the force it can generate. Patients typically report relief within one to two weeks, and it is often the more life-changing of the two outcomes.

The cosmetic reason is jaw width. A chronically overworked masseter hypertrophies, squaring the lower face. Reducing its activity lets it gradually atrophy, which narrows the jaw over two to three months. Nobody sees this at two weeks, and expecting to is the most common source of disappointment.

    Dosing and how many sessions

Typical dosing runs 30-40 units total, adjusted for muscle bulk — clench your jaw and the masseter is easy to palpate, and a genuinely hypertrophic one may need more. At $16 per unit standard and $14.40/unit for members, a typical session is roughly $480-$640, or $432-$576 as a member.

For clenching relief, one session often does the job and gets repeated every four to six months. For visible slimming, most patients need two to three sessions spaced about three months apart before the muscle has atrophied enough to change the jaw's outline, then move to maintenance two or three times a year.

Once the muscle has been deconditioned over several cycles, many patients find they can stretch the interval considerably. Longevity here is often better than upper-face treatment for exactly that reason.

    Realistic side effects

Chewing fatigue in the first couple of weeks is common — tough steak, bagels, and gum feel like more work than usual. It resolves as you adapt.

A temporary asymmetric or slightly altered smile can occur if product diffuses forward into the risorius or zygomaticus. This is a placement issue: injections belong in the lower, posterior portion of the muscle, well behind the anterior border, and deep. It resolves as the effect wears off.

Over-treating across many cycles can slim the lower face more than intended, which some patients find hollows the mid-face and reads as gaunt. This is why we dose to your muscle and reassess rather than repeating the same number indefinitely. Masseter work is a small part of what we do, and we are comfortable telling someone their jaw does not need it.

    Who it suits

Good candidates have a palpably bulky masseter when they clench, a genuine grinding or tension problem, or a lower face they feel is disproportionately wide relative to their cheekbones.

It is a poor fit for a wide jaw that is bony rather than muscular — you can feel the difference on palpation, and no amount of neuromodulator narrows bone. It is also not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for patients with a neuromuscular disorder.

If your jaw pain is primarily a temporomandibular joint problem rather than muscular, masseter treatment may help the muscular component but is not a complete answer, and a dental or TMJ specialist should be part of the plan.

    Good for

    • Adults bothered by a square or wide-set jaw shape
    • Patients with clenching, grinding, or TMJ-related jaw tension
    • People who experience tension headaches from masseter activity
    • Anyone wanting non-surgical lower-face slimming

    Not ideal if

    • Pregnant or breastfeeding patients
    • Active skin infection at the injection site
    • Patients with significant facial volume loss where slimming would worsen hollowness
    • Certain neuromuscular conditions — your injector will screen at consultation

    Questions about masseter botox

Functional relief from clenching often starts within 1–2 weeks. The visible slimming effect develops more slowly — usually 6–12 weeks as the muscle atrophies from reduced use.

Masseter Botox is priced per unit. Most patients use 20–40 units per side. Total pricing is posted on our Treatments page. Members of our injectable membership get per-unit pricing built into their plan.

Many patients with clenching or grinding find significant relief. Your injector will assess your symptoms at consultation — masseter Botox is most effective when the issue is muscle-driven. For severe TMJ, a coordinated plan with your dentist may help.

A single treatment lasts 4–6 months. With consistent treatment, the muscle reduces progressively and the slimming effect becomes more durable.

Properly placed masseter Botox doesn't affect your smile. Chewing may feel slightly weaker for the first few weeks, especially with tough foods like steak or bagels, but this is mild and temporary.

Yes. Many male patients use masseter Botox for clenching and grinding relief without significant face-slimming effect at lower doses.
