    Sculptra

A poly-L-lactic acid biostimulator that gradually rebuilds collagen for long-lasting volume.

    The short answer

Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, a bio-stimulant that prompts your own collagen to rebuild over several months rather than filling volume instantly. At Plump a vial is $850 ($750 for members), most patients need two to three vials spaced about a month apart, and results build over 3-6 months and last up to two years.

    About Sculptra

Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, a biostimulator that triggers your body to produce its own collagen over a series of months. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, Sculptra doesn't add immediate volume — instead it rebuilds the underlying support structure of the skin gradually, producing results that look and feel like your own tissue because they are.

At Plump we use Sculptra for facial volume restoration in patients with diffuse volume loss, for skin quality improvements in areas like the cheeks and temples, and for body indications like the buttocks (sometimes called a non-surgical BBL). Treatment is usually a series of 2–3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Results develop over 3–6 months and typically last 2 years or longer, making Sculptra one of the longest-lasting cosmetic injectables available. It's not reversible like HA filler, which is why we plan carefully and dose conservatively.

    In depth

A collagen stimulant, not a filler

Hyaluronic acid filler occupies space the moment it is injected — you see the result immediately. Sculptra does something fundamentally different. Poly-L-lactic acid microparticles are suspended in fluid and placed in the deep dermis and subcutaneous plane, where they trigger a controlled inflammatory response. Your fibroblasts respond by laying down new type I collagen. The particles themselves fully break down.

The practical consequence is that the fluid volume you see on day one disappears within 48 hours, and then nothing appears to happen for weeks. The actual result arrives gradually between month two and month six. Patients who understand this are happy. Patients who expected filler are not.

Because the change is your own tissue rebuilding, the outcome tends to read as "looks well" rather than "has had something done." This is the reason Sculptra is popular with people who explicitly do not want to look treated.

What it is good at — and what it is not

Sculptra is strongest for diffuse, global volume loss: flattened temples, hollowing across the mid-face, crepey texture along the cheeks and jawline, and the generalized deflation that shows up in the late thirties onward. It restores foundation across a broad area.

It is not the right tool for precision work. Sharp jawline definition, lip shape, a defined chin projection, or under-eye hollows all need a product you can place exactly and predictably. Sculptra spreads by design, which is why it is placed away from the tear trough and other high-risk, high-precision zones.

The two are frequently combined in a plan: Sculptra to rebuild the underlying foundation, hyaluronic acid on top for definition. That sequencing usually requires less filler overall than filler alone would.

    Vials, sessions, and cost

A vial is $850, or $750 for members. Most patients need two to three vials for a full-face result, delivered in separate sessions roughly four weeks apart. Significant volume loss can need more; localized work can need less.

The total is meaningful, so it is worth doing the arithmetic honestly against filler. Two to three Sculptra vials over a few months, holding up to two years, sits in a comparable range to the multiple syringes of hyaluronic acid needed to address the same area over that span — while producing a different, more diffuse kind of result.

We stage sessions deliberately rather than front-loading. Assessing at four weeks lets us see how much collagen you are actually building before deciding on the next vial, which is how we avoid over-treating.

    Aftercare: the massage protocol

Sculptra has an aftercare requirement most injectables do not. We ask patients to massage the treated areas five minutes at a time, five times a day, for five days. This distributes the particles evenly and materially reduces the risk of nodules — small, firm collections of collagen that can form where product clusters.

This is not optional advice. Nodule risk is the main downside of Sculptra, and adherence to massage plus correct dilution and injection depth is the primary way it is controlled.

Expect mild swelling and possible bruising for a few days. There is no meaningful downtime beyond that, and you can wear makeup the following day.

    Who it suits

The best candidates have generalized volume loss, want a gradual change nobody can date to a specific appointment, and are willing to wait several months for the result. Patience is genuinely part of candidacy here.

It is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for anyone with an active skin infection in the treatment area, or for patients with a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring. If you need to look different for an event in six weeks, this is the wrong treatment and we will say so.

    Good for

    • Adults with diffuse facial volume loss
    • Patients seeking longer-lasting results than HA filler
    • People wanting collagen stimulation rather than added product
    • Patients considering non-surgical body contouring (e.g., buttocks)

    Not ideal if

    • Pregnant or breastfeeding patients
    • Patients wanting immediate, reversible results (consider HA filler)
    • History of keloid scarring or autoimmune disease — discuss at consultation
    • Active skin infection at the treatment site

    Questions about sculptra

A vial is $850 at Plump, $750 for members. Most patients need two to three vials spaced about a month apart, so a full course is typically $1,700–$2,550 — held over roughly two years.

Results build gradually as your own collagen forms — meaningful change at 6–8 weeks, full result at 3–6 months. Anything visible the day after treatment is swelling from the injection fluid, not the result.

Those are marketing names, not procedures. Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, a collagen bio-stimulant. Used across the midface, temples and jawline it produces the diffuse lift people mean by 'liquid facelift,' but it is not a surgical result and we will not describe it as one.

Filler adds immediate volume by sitting in the tissue. Sculptra stimulates your body to produce its own collagen over months. The result is more gradual but typically lasts much longer — 2 years or more.

Most patients see results last 2 years or longer from a complete treatment series. Some patients see effects persist even longer.

No. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, Sculptra cannot be dissolved. This is why we plan conservatively and only treat patients who are good candidates for gradual, longer-lasting results.

Most facial treatment plans involve 2–3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Body indications like the buttocks may require more. Your injector will recommend a plan at consultation.

Pricing is per vial and posted on our Treatments page. The total cost depends on how many vials your treatment plan requires.

Mild swelling and possible bruising for several days. You'll be asked to massage the treated area at home in the days after treatment to help even distribution.
